MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan, who finds herself at odds with her family over Zoe (Natalia Morales), her deceased best friend from the military. Despite the persistence of her group counselor VA (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the frivolity of her unexpected love interest, Merritt’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the pair from isolating themselves from the world. That is, until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), who is holed up in the family’s lake house, starts to lose his bearings and needs the one thing he refuses to give… help. It’s basically a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a fractured family, and the complicated ways we process grief.
