Greetings from the Dark Again

Chronology

A family’s vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover that the island they’re on is haunted by a serial killer. This is the first time Aisling Bee and Nick Frost have starred together in a comedy Folk Horror Movie. Every film review offers an opportunity to tread the line between enough storytelling, but not too much.

Some films pose a bigger challenge than others, and this is one

Director Stefan Haars (the New Kids films) and writer/actor Nick Frost team up to deliver a devilishly funny folk horror comedy that brings a little innovation to a genre that could use a boost. Nick Frost stars as Richard Smith, a dad-joke-loving guy desperate for a relaxing vacation with his family. He is joined by his wife Susan (the multi-talented Aisling Bee) and their teenagers Sam (Sebastian Croft, “Heartstopper”) and Jessie (Maisie Ayers in her first feature film).

Upon arrival, the locals greet them with an icy and somewhat threatening welcome

Their odd choice for a “getaway” is Svalta, a remote Swedish island with a dark history, with its tragic 19th-century plague that nearly wiped out the population. The family has planned the trip around the Karantan Festival (Quarantine), commemorating the unfortunate events of the past. Referring to the festival as a “play” doesn’t help their cause, and it’s only when their sinister Airbnb landlord (Eero Milanoff) shows up to claim them that the tension eases a bit.

The house they’ve rented seems perfect, but soon things start to look a little off

Sam’s vegetarian diet and Jesse’s energetic approach add an extra dimension, while Richard and Susan taunt each other skillfully (as we’d expect from Frost and Bea). This was my second Nick Frost horror film in less than a month, as it comes on the heels of his much less entertaining turn in BLACK CAB. Of course, he’s known for his comedic chops in the Cornetto trilogy, and his writing here is pretty impressive.

Opening in theaters December 6, 2024

The film really plays up all the “outsiders” feeling unwanted… right before the glorious twist that turns the film into an unusual bloodbath. Barry Blue singing “I Eat Cannibals” provides a fitting musical ending to this wild ride from Shudder Films.
